I would like to invite you to join us at Greater Lafayette Democracy for America. Democracy for America is a group that was made up of the structure that remained after Howard Dean abandoned his bid for the Presidency. While he didn’t reach the Presidency, there must have been something in his message that resonated with Democrats because they made him Chairman of the Party shortly after his candidacy ended. He still promotes the same message and he’s taken it to all fifty states, not just the ‘battleground” states. He believes, and now so does President Bill Clinton who has joined Dean in this effort, that Indiana matters and GLDFA works to promote the same ideas throughout our community.

The June meeting for GLDFA will be on the 18th at The Village Coffeehouse. We'll pick up where we left off last week and hope to build on our attendance. Please come out if you can. Our need to grow and plan doesn't take a break from the heat. I'd like to hear any news you may have about the municiple elections and talk a bit about 2008, it's not that far away.

Visions of Fascism in America: Roth and Lewis

Mon, 2007-03-26 19:00

Monday, March 26
The Elm Room, WL Public Library
7:00 – 9:00 pm

The topic for this second ACLU sponsored Book Read is “Visions of Facism in America: Lewis and Roth” and is based on two fictional works:
• It Can’t Happen Here, by Sinclair Lewis
• The Plot Against America, by Philip Roth

Both are set in the late 1930’s, but were written 60 years apart. Participants are challenged to examine the messages of each book, one based on the present, the other written with historical perspective, and to consider each of these with respect to modern threats to democracy and freedom.

If you are not familiar with the DFA Academy program and curriculum, there is a brief description on the DFA website. We will also be posting local information and links on the DFMC website. (Links below.) The training, which spans two days (Saturday and Sunday) will be held at the Indiana Memorial Union on the campus of Indiana University. There will also be a social meet-and-greet event on Friday evening, and an informal party Saturday evening.

WALLA Forum for State Legislature Candidates

Submitted by admin on Thu, 2006-09-21 09:44.

Last night state candidates from the area were invited by WALLA (Wabash Area Lifelong Learning A....I can't remember) to weigh in on a number of issues that they are likely to face on the campaign trail and in the next session of the state legislature. The session was attended by Shelia Klinker State Rep district 27, and her opponent Jack Rhoda, Joe Micon, State Rep district 26 and his opponent Connie Basham, and Dave Vorbeck and his opponent, incumbent State Senator for district 22, Ron Alting. The night began with a brief statement by each candidate and then three questions that had been posed to the attendees prior to the event so they could prepare their responses to them. After those were answered, the moderator turned to questions submitted by the attendees that had been screened for relevance and content. Each candidate had one and a half minutes to respond to each question and all did well in that respect.

Blog for the cause

Submitted by admin on Mon, 2006-07-24 12:35.

While we haven't had much activity here there is an opportunity to be a volunteer blogger for Tippecanoe Politics on Blogspot.com. Here are the details:

Over the last two months Tippecanoe Politics has grown and grown. Since starting, we ‎have established a core group of readers, and the number of active readers is increasing ‎on a weekly basis.‎

In order to keep up with our reader base, we would like to implement a few changes and ‎suggestions. ‎

First, we are noticing a lot of anonymous comments. That’s OK. However, we ask that ‎if you are going to post anonymously, come up with a pseudonym or some sort of user ‎name. After you come up with a name, make sure to put the name at the end of your ‎post. This will put some personality behind the post, and will allow us to see which ‎personality is posting. For example, we post as “Tippecanoe Politics.”

No GLDFA TONIGHT

Submitted by admin on Wed, 2006-05-03 16:38.

There will be no meeting of the Greater Lafayette DFA tonight. I'm sorry to give such short notice, but my information is that everyone is bone tired and would llke the night off of politics. I would have to echo those sentiments.

Certainly a great congratulations goes out to ALL of the victorious Democrats from yesterdays primary. We have a great slate of candidates and hopefully we can add others to the slate. I think this is a VERY good year for Democrats. If you know of anyone who is still mildly interested please encourage them to get involved.

I'll see many of you at Drinking Liberally tomorrow night. Please feel free to share your feelings about the Primary on our forum page under the heading "general".

Poll Workers Needed!

Submitted by admin on Fri, 2006-04-28 16:50.

There are still a few spots for poll owrkers that need to be filled. While I can't do it this year since I'm a candidate, I have worked a poll in the past and I recomend the experience to anyone. It is a paid position and food and beverage are provided. Getting to work with others in the community and getting to know people in your community is important. PLEASE help if you can.

Call Heather at the board of election or Amy Corbett-Clinton at 463-1572.

Thank you!
